Insulating the roof and loft

Warm air rises, and the roof is the surface that is easiest to reach in most houses. That makes the loft the place where each krone usually returns the most.

What it does to energy use

Largest surface, easiest access

In a cold loft the insulation can be laid on top of the existing layer without tearing anything out. Few measures cost so little per square metre.

Icicles are a warning

Icicles form when heat escapes and melts snow that refreezes at the eaves. They are a visible sign of heat loss.

The ventilation gap must stay open

Insulation pushed right out to the eaves blocks the air gap. The loft then turns damp, and you have swapped a heat problem for a moisture problem.

The vapour barrier decides

Without a sealed vapour barrier, humid indoor air is carried up into the insulation and condenses where it is cold.

Sequence matters

The loft is the natural first measure on the building envelope, both because it is the cheapest and because it can be done without demolition. Take it before sizing the heat source — everything you do to the roof reduces the demand the pump has to cover.
