Solar panels on the roof

Solar panels produce electricity where you use it. The value depends less on how much the system produces and more on how much of that output you manage to use yourself.

See what this means for your home

This measure is relevant if

  • The roof faces south, east or west and is largely unshaded
  • The roof covering has years left, or is being replaced anyway
  • You use electricity during the day, or can move usage there
  • You have or are considering a water heater or EV charger that can be controlled

What it does to energy use

Self-consumption decides the value

Electricity you use yourself replaces purchased electricity including grid tariff and taxes. Electricity you sell back usually returns less per kilowatt-hour.

Production does not follow consumption

Most production in May to July, most consumption in December to February. That is why controllable loads matter so much for the economics.

Orientation and pitch

South-facing gives the highest total production. East-west spreads output more evenly across the day, and often raises self-consumption.

Shade costs more than its area suggests

Shade on one part of the array can pull down more than the shaded share, depending on how the panels are wired.

Sequence matters

Solar panels can be fitted at any time, but return most once you already have something controllable to spend the output on — a water heater, a heat pump or an EV charger. Do the building envelope first and consumption falls, so a smaller array covers the same share of it.

Enova funding

Solar panels are among the measures Enova funds. The scheme has been built around a fixed base amount plus an addition per installed kilowatt-peak.

Rates and terms change. What you can receive depends on the building, how the work is carried out and which schemes apply at the time. Always check Enova's own pages before relying on a figure.

The rates tell you what you can receive. The calculation tells you what the measure actually does to your home — how much it saves, what it costs, and whether it should come before or after the others.
