A heating control system regulates temperature by room and across the day. Unlike price control, it actually reduces the number of kilowatt-hours.

What it does to energy use

Night setback saves for real

A lower temperature when nobody is awake reduces heat loss, because the loss follows the difference between inside and outside.

Zones rather than whole house

Rooms that are not in use do not need full temperature. The effect is largest in big homes with uneven use.

Thermal mass sets the limit

A heavy house with underfloor heating cannot be lowered and raised quickly. Frequent setback then yields little, and can cost more in reheating.

Moisture needs watching

Too low a temperature over time in little-used rooms can cause condensation on cold surfaces. Setback should have a floor.

Sequence matters

Control comes after the building envelope. In a poorly insulated house the temperature drops fast when the heat is turned down, and you spend more bringing it back than you saved. The better insulated the house, the more night setback is worth.
