Energy-efficient lighting

Lighting is a smaller share of household energy use than many assume, but it is cheap to address — and in buildings with long operating hours the item becomes significant.

See what this means for your home

This measure is relevant if

  • The home still has halogen or incandescent bulbs
  • Lights are left on in rooms that are not in use
  • Outdoor lighting runs all night
  • You want a measure that costs little and can be done at once

What it does to energy use

LED uses a fraction

An LED bulb gives the same light output for far less power than halogen, and lasts considerably longer.

The heat from lighting counts in winter

Old bulbs gave off heat that contributed to heating. Replace them and that free heat disappears, so part of the saving is eaten up during the heating season.

In summer it is a pure gain

The same heat output is a drawback when it is warm. In buildings with cooling it counts twice.

Control matters more than the bulb

Motion sensors and daylight control cut the hours the light is on. In shared areas and outdoor lighting that is often larger than the bulb swap itself.

Sequence matters

Lighting can be done at any time and depends on nothing else. It is a good place to start if you want to see something happen quickly, but do not expect much movement on the energy label of a home — there, heating is the dominant item.
