Energy storage at home

Energy storage moves energy in time — either as electricity in a battery or as heat in a buffer tank. The value lies in the fact that production and consumption rarely coincide.

What it does to energy use

It raises self-consumption from solar

Electricity produced at midday can be used in the evening. That is the difference between replacing purchased electricity and selling it back cheaply.

It shaves the peak

A battery can cover the highest hours, so the grid tariff's capacity element is calculated on a lower band.

Heat storage is cheaper than a battery

A buffer tank stores energy as heat at a fraction of the cost per kilowatt-hour, but can only return heat.

Storage has losses

Both batteries and tanks lose something along the way. The net gain is stored energy minus losses, not the whole amount.

Sequence matters

Storage comes last. It depends on there being something to store — solar panels, a collector or a heat source that runs in bursts — and on consumption being mapped, so the system is sized to actual peaks rather than to rules of thumb.

Enova funding

Enova has two schemes that touch this: buffer tanks for heat storage, and price- and load-controlled energy storage for the electrical version.
