Ground-source heat pump

A ground-source heat pump draws heat from a borehole or a collector in the ground. It differs from air-based systems in that the source holds a steady temperature all year.

What it does to energy use

A steady source gives steady performance

Ground temperature varies little through the year. Performance therefore does not fall on the coldest days, as it does for air-based pumps.

High investment, long life

The borehole is the large cost, and it lasts considerably longer than the pump itself. The sum has to work over many years.

The borehole must be sized

Extract more heat than the ground can replace and the borehole temperature falls over the years, taking performance with it.

Nearly free cooling

Cold fluid from the borehole can provide passive cooling in summer, at far lower consumption than a cooling plant.

Sequence matters

A ground-source pump is sized to the heat demand, so it belongs after everything that changes that demand. It is also the measure where oversizing costs most — the borehole depth cannot be reduced afterwards.
