Waterborne heating

Waterborne heating is the distribution system, not the heat source. It is what lets a home use a heat pump, district heating or a solar collector instead of electricity alone.

What it does to energy use

Low flow temperature is the point

Underfloor heating manages on a lower water temperature than radiators. The lower the temperature the system needs, the better the heat pump serving it performs.

Freedom to change the source

With waterborne heating the source can be replaced without touching the distribution. It is a system that outlives the source.

Thermal mass evens the temperature

A poured floor with heating pipes holds its heat. That gives an even temperature but makes the system slow to turn down again.

Expensive to retrofit

In a finished house it means tearing up floors or adding a screed that raises the floor level. The cost depends heavily on whether something is being done anyway.

Sequence matters

Waterborne heating goes in before the heat source is chosen, and preferably at the same time as the building envelope is upgraded — both require opening up structures. The other way round means choosing a pump for a system whose flow temperature you do not yet know.

Waterborne heating is not a measure of its own at Enova, but the heat sources that feed it are: air-to-water and ground-source heat pumps, biomass boilers and water-jacketed stoves. The support follows the source, not the pipes.
