Heat pump water heater

A heat pump water heater has a small heat pump built into the tank. It draws heat from the surrounding air instead of producing all the heat with electricity.

This measure is relevant if

  • The tank stands in a basement, utility room or store
  • The room has enough air volume, or can be ducted
  • The tank is due for replacement anyway
  • You have no waterborne heating and will not install it

What it does to energy use

Less electricity per litre of hot water

The heat pump moves heat rather than creating it, so it uses considerably less electricity per litre than an immersion element.

It cools the room it stands in

The heat it collects comes from the room air. In a heated basement part of the gain is eaten up by having to warm that room again.

It dehumidifies

The same process draws moisture out of the air. In a damp basement that is a benefit, not a side effect.

It needs space and air

The unit is taller than an ordinary tank and needs a certain air volume, or a duct to outdoor air, to perform as promised.

Sequence matters

The tank can be replaced independently of the other measures, which makes it a good place to start. One caveat: if you later install an air-to-water or ground-source heat pump, it can cover the hot water, and the tank becomes an investment you make twice.
