Water-jacketed stove

An ordinary wood stove heats the room it stands in. A stove with a water jacket sends part of the heat into the waterborne system, so the rest of the home benefits from it.

What it does to energy use

The heat gets distributed

Without a water jacket the living room overheats while the rest of the house stays cold. With one, the surplus goes where it is needed.

A buffer tank is not optional

A stove delivers a lot of heat in short bursts. With nowhere to store it, the heat has to be used at once and most of it is lost.

Independent of the grid

Wood burns without electricity. Where the supply is unreliable that is a resilience value the energy accounts do not show.

Clean burning and local rules

New stoves are clean-burning and emit considerably fewer particulates than old ones. Some municipalities have their own rules on wood burning — check before installing.

Sequence matters

The stove comes after the waterborne system and after the tank — without them the water jacket has no function. It is also a supplement rather than a main source: it needs someone to load it, and cannot cover the heat demand on its own.
