A biomass boiler heats the entire waterborne system, hot water included. Unlike a stove it is a main heat source, not a supplement.

  • There is room for both the boiler and fuel storage
  • You want to replace electricity or oil as the main source

What it does to energy use

It covers the whole demand

Both space heating and hot water. That is what separates it from a stove, which only contributes.

Storage is the practical limit

Pellets need a silo or store room, and logs need dry storage. Space decides this more often than economics do.

Efficiency falls at part load

A boiler oversized for the demand runs in short bursts. Efficiency then drops, and fuel consumption rises more than the heat demand would suggest.

It needs attention

Ash has to come out, fuel has to go in, and the plant needs servicing. That is an operating job a heat pump does not have.

Sequence matters

The boiler is the main heat source and is sized to the heat demand. It therefore belongs after everything that changes that demand — envelope, windows and ventilation — just like a heat pump.
